Key Cavaliers guard will miss prolonged time with ankle sprain.

Key Cavaliers

The Cavaliers said in a news release that Max Strus sprained his right ankle during individual practices on Thursday. To confirm the extent of the sprain, the veteran swingman had an MRI and an X-ray.

After Strus completes six weeks of therapy and rehabilitation, the team plans to review him. According to that timeframe, he will likely miss the remainder of this month as well as all of November. During that time, the Cavaliers will play 20 games.

This is a disappointing setback for Strus and the Cavaliers, who had the 28-year-old in their starting lineup for 70 regular-season games and 12 more playoff games last season. Strus had missed some time this preseason due to a right hip contusion, but he seemed to be on the verge of returning for the team's regular-season opener.

Strus signed a four-year, $62 million contract in free agency and contributed well in his debut season in Cleveland. With a.351 3PT%, he averaged 12.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game.

Due to Strus' injury, the Cavaliers will probably rely more on Caris LeVert, a sixth man who may start. Other contenders for expanded responsibilities include Sam Merrill, Georges Niang, and Ty Jerome.
